Meet the man who tamed Nigeria's most lawless city

Babatunde Fashola, governor of Lagos, has transformed the city - and helped halt the spread of Ebola in Nigeria

Babatunde Fashola

He famously claims to be "just doing his job". But in a land where politicians are known for doing anything but, that alone has been enough to make Babatunde Fashola, boss of the vast Nigerian city of Lagos, a very popular man.
Confounding the image of Nigerian leaders as corrupt and incompetent, the 51-year-old governor has won near-celebrity status for transforming west Africa's biggest city, cleaing up its crime-ridden slums and declaring war on corrupt police and civil servants.
Next month, he will come to London to meet business leaders and Mayor Boris Johnson's officials, wooing investors with talk of how he has spent the last seven years building new transport hubs and gleaming business parks.
Yet arguably his biggest achievement in office took place just last week, and was done without a bulldozer in sight. That was when his country was officially declared free of Ebola, which first spread to Nigeria three months ago when Patrick Sawyer, an infected Liberian diplomat, flew into Lagos airport.
Health officials had long feared that the outbreak, which has already claimed nearly 5,000 lives elsewhere in west Africa, would reach catastrophic proportions were it to spread through Lagos. One of the largest cities in the world, it is home to an estimated 17 million people, many of them living in sprawling shanty towns that would have become vast reservoirs for infection. To make matters worse, when the outbreak first happened, medics were on strike.
nstead, Mr Fashola turned a looming disaster into a public health and PR triumph. Breaking off from a trip overseas, he took personal charge of the operation to track down and quarantine nearly 1,000 people feared to have been infected since Mr Sawyer's arrival.
Last week, what would have been a formidably complex operation in any country came to a successful end, when the World Health Organisation announced that since Nigeria had had no new cases for six weeks, it was now officially rid of the virus.
"This is a spectacular success story," said Rui Gama Vaz, a WHO spokesman, who prompted an applause when he broke the news at a press conference in Nigeria on Tuesday. "It shows that Ebola can be contained."
A school official takes a pupil's temperature in front of the school premises in Lagos

The WHO announcement was a rare glimmer of hope in the fight against Ebola, and even rarer vote of confidence in a branch of the Nigerian government, which was heavily criticised over its response to the abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls by the Boko Haram insurgent group in April. As a columninst in Nigeria's Leadership newspaper put it last week: "For once, we did not underachieve."
For Mr Fashola's many supporters, it is also yet more proof that the 51-year-old ex-lawyer is a future president in the making, a much-needed technocrat in a country dominated far too long by ageing "Big Men" and ex-generals.
"He is the best governor we have ever had," said Odun Babalola, a Lagos-based pension fund portfolio manager. "He's made a lot of progress in schools, railways, and infrastructure, and unlike a lot of politicians, who are corrupt, he's a good administrator."
True, the successful tackling of the Ebola outbreak was not Mr Fashola's doing alone. For a start, the doctor's strike that was under way when Mr Sawyer collapsed at Lagos airport turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Rather than being taken to one of Lagos's vast public hospitals, where he might have languished for hours and infected numerous fellow patients and staff, he was instead admitted to a private clinic. There he was seen by a sharp-eyed consultant, Stella Adadevoh, who spotted that his symptoms were not malaria as had been first thought.
She then alerted the Nigerian health ministry, and along with other doctors physically restrained Sawyer when he became aggressive and tried to leave the hospital to fly to another Nigerian city. Her quick thinking help stop the virus being spread more widely, but also cost her her life: she caught Ebola herself while treating Mr Sawyer, and has now been recommended for a national award.

But even by the time Mr Sawyer had been isolated, the virus was already on the loose. Knowing that he had passed through one of the busiest airports in west Africa, health officials had to try to track down every single person who had potentially been infected by him, including the other passengers on his flight. The list started at 281 people and grew to nearly 1,000. as eight others whom he turned out to have passed the virus to subsequently died.
That was where Mr Fashola stepped in. He broke off from a pilgrimage to Mecca, flew home and then helped set up an Ebola Emergency Operations Centre, which spearheaded the mammoth task of monitoring all those potentially infected. A team of 2,000 officials were trained for the task, who ended up knocking on 26,000 doors. At one point the governor was being briefed up to ten times a day by disease control experts. He made a point of visiting the country's Ebola treatment centre, a way of communicating to the Nigerian public that they should not panic needlessly.
"Command and control is very important in fighting disease outbreaks, and he provided effective leadership," said Dr Ike Anya, a London-based Nigerian public health expert. "He also said exactly the right things, urging for the need to keep calm. Regardless of whether you support his politics, he has been very effective as a governor and I would be happy to see him stand for leadership."
Born into a prominent Muslim family but married to a Christian, Mr Fashola trained as a lawyer and went into politics after being appointed chief of staff by the previous Lagos governor, Asiwaju Tinubu, a powerful politician often described as Mr Fashola's "Godfather". But while he has long enjoyed the backing of a political "Big Man", is his role as a rare defender of Nigeria's "Little Men" that has won him most support.
Once, while driving through Lagos in his convoy, he famously stopped an army colonel who was driving illegally in one of the governor's newly-built bus lanes, berating him in front of television cameras.

Woman who allegedly transformed from a bird dies in hospital

According to Twitter user, @davidTheGear, a few minutes ago at Oshodi, a bird fell from a high tension wire and landed on the ground and turned into a woman. The woman that the bird supposedly turned into had most of her skin peeled. Photo above. Can this be explained other than she's a witch?

Keke Palmer latest victim in nude celebrity photo hacks

U.S. actress Keke Palmer is the latest victim of the celebrity nude photo hacks that have rocked Hollywood in recent weeks, Bustle entertainment news website reported.
Palmer, who stars in Broadway’s edition of “Cinderella,” reportedly appears fully clothed in some pictures and partially clothed in others. In some of the topless photos, posted online, her piercings and tattoos are visible. However, it is yet to be confirmed whether it really is Palmer in the leaked photos.
The 21 year-old is best known for starring Nickelodeon’s “Tru Jackson” and Akeelah and the Bee opposite Laurence Fishburne.
After news of the photos broke, Palmer seemed to ignore the incident and posted a selfie on her Instagram and Twitter accounts. While she did not release a public statement addressing the photos, Palmer shared a picture of a quote that read: “I’m a pervert, but in a romantic way.”
The Broadway star joins a string of Hollywood celebrities who have had their nude photos hacked and leaked on the internet.
A victim, Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence spoke out for the first time in an interview with Vanity Fair against what she called a “sex crime” rather than a “scandal.”
“It is a sexual violation. It’s disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change. That’s why these websites are responsible. Just the fact that somebody can be sexually exploited and violated, and the first thought that crosses somebody’s mind is to make a profit from it. It’s so beyond me. I just can’t imagine being that detached from humanity. I can’t imagine being that thoughtless and careless and so empty inside,” she said.
Hackers also targeted Kate Upton, Kim Kardashian, Victoria Justice, Vanessa Hudgens, Meagan Good and others.
Rumors blamed a glitch in Apple’s iCloud, but the tech giant came out in defense of its system saying that the problem lied in weak passwords which allowed hackers to tap into the celebrities’ phones.

Kim Kardashian Says Kanye’s Australian Concert Was Ruined By ‘Lies In The Media’ 'The media twists things,' Kim says.

Kim Kardashian-West proved once again that she’s unequivocally Kanye West’s ride-or-die chick.
The reality superstar took to Instagram Monday (September 15) to post her thoughts about the Brisbane, Australia, stop of her hubby’s Yeezus Tour Sunday night, and insisted that fan-made videos on the ‘Net clear him of any wrongdoing in the wheelchair-bound fans incident. The Chicago rapper was accused of insensitivity for allegedly asking handicapped concertgoers to stand during his performance.
“What an amazing Australian tour! Its frustrating that something so awesome could be clouded by lies in the media. Kanye never asked anyone in a wheel chair to stand up & the audience videos show that. He asked for everyone to stand up & dance UNLESS they were in a wheel chair. #JustWantedEveryoneToHaveAFunNight #TheMediaTwistsThings,” she wrote in the caption.

No matter what you think of the KimYe marriage, you can’t help but admire her willingness to stand by her man. And a fan-shot video of the incident seems to back up Kim’s account of what went down.

The “I Am a God” MC initially came under fire for asking everyone in the audience — including two wheelchair-bound fans — at his concert to stand up before he would continue performing “Good Life.” But he can be heard making an exception for the disabled fans in the footage.
“I can’t do the rest of this show until everybody stand up,” Kanye said. “And I’mma see you if you ain’t standing’ up … if he’s in a wheelchair then it’s fine — only if he’s in a wheelchair.http://photos-b.ak.instagram.com/hphotos-ak-xaf1/10693779_774840125892945_1891308348_n.jpg
Once West’s bodyguard Pascal Duvier verified that the fan was actually in a wheelchair, ‘Ye launched into the Graduation track.
Considering all of the more important news in the world, Kanye advised the media to “pick another target.” “I’m a married Christian man with a family,” ‘Ye said in his defense earlier Monday. “At my concerts, I make sure everybody has good of a time as possible, so all this demonizing me it ain’t going to work after a while.”

Microsoft Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 benchmarks and hands-on

Microsoft Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 benchmarks and hands-on

Microsoft launched the next-generation Surface 2 and Surface 2 Pro at an event in New York City on Monday, pairing them with a number of new covers and other accessories designed to enhance the functionality of the basic Surface experience. The basic message is that Microsoft has enhanced the Surface with additional performance, while extending battery life and slimming down the tablet’s overall profile with skinnier covers.
Old Surface Pro versus new Surface 2.
On the first count, Microsoft certainly appears to have succeeded; the addition of an upgraded Core processor to the Surface Pro 2 undeniably improves the tablet. A quick hands-on with both the new Touch and Type Covers leaves me thinking that Microsoft has taken a step back with its portable keyboards, however.

Surface 2 Pro: Can you play games? Yes

Inside the Surface 2 Pro is a self-reported Intel Core i5-4200 “Haswell” CPU running at 1.6GHz, versus the Core i5-3317u “Ivy Bridge” chip at 1.7GHz that powered the original Surface.
The original Surface Pro conked out under heavy load in just 2.5 hours or so, though lighter Web browsing and battery management could push it out a couple more. One Microsoft employee we talked to felt that the new Surface Pro 2 could pull 5 hours under heavy gaming. (With the new Power Cover, battery life will be extended to 10-plus hours.) A more formal review will settle the difference.
What is clear, however, is that the Surface Pro 2 is definitely a gaming machine of some sort. Microsoft showed off World of Warcraft and Portal 2 running smoothly—yes, these games are several years old, but they do run, and well.
A face-down Surface 2 shows off the new kickstand angle.
Still, numbers generally don’t lie. I slipped in a USB key with FutureMark’s PCMark 7 suite (the Surface won’t run a test or two in our more recent WorldBench 8 and 8.1 tests). We re-benchmarked the original Surface Pro (128 GB/4 GB RAM) and generated a score of 4,447. The new Surface Pro 2 (256 GB/8 GB RAM) returned a score of 4,888 using the identical benchmark—just 9 percent better. That’s not earth-shattering, but we are talking about generational improvements from one set of integrated GPUs to the next.
Since our tests are confined to x86 processors, we didn’t benchmark the ARM processor-based Surface 2. It felt speedy enough, but that’s a very basic impression.

The new Type Cover: hmmm....

Let’s be clear: Typing is a personal activity, and most users have their own set of subjective preferences regarding their own keyboards, mice, and monitors. I’ve never liked using the Touch Cover, for example, if only because the relative lack of tactile feedback slows me down and forces me to hunt and peck more than usual. But I’ve always felt that the Type Cover nearly provided a full keyboard experience, with satisfactory tactile feedback and a travel distance that made me feel like I was using a desktop keyboard.
The new Type Cover is about a millimeter thinner than the original.
Subjectively, I tend to prefer big and clunky—and that’s not the direction Microsoft is moving in. Both the new Type and Touch Covers are slimmer than before, shaving off a millimeter or so of thickness on each. But Microsoft also took a real step forward, adding dynamic backlights that sense the presence of your hands and turn off when not in use. Backlights don’t seem like a big deal, but that misunderstanding disappears the first time you take your tablet or laptop into a crowded conference room or lecture hall and the lights dim.
I brought my old Surface Pro along, both for the plane ride to New York as well as to the event itself for a direct comparison. Personally, the Type Cover feels like a small step back—not huge, but noticeable.
And while I still don’t like the Touch Cover, well, it felt slightly more usable than I remember it.  (And no, I don’t know if the older Touch Covers can be used with the new model.)

Striding boldly forward

The new Surface 2 docking station, due next year.
Microsoft didn’t have the Docking Station (right, and at top) or the Power Cover set up to use, leaving me with the impression that the company is still finalizing the design.
I suspect—well, hope—that Microsoft’s on to something here, though. If Microsoft plays its cards right, the Docking Station could transform the Surface into the engine powering something like a desktop, while the Power Cover could add the stability to make the Surface a true convertible tablet or two-in-one. (In a nice touch, Microsoft employees told me that the Power Cover charges the Surface’s internal battery, so that you can grab it and go if need be.)
Quite frankly, Panos Panay, the Microsoft executive in charge of the Surface launch, oversold it a bit. Seriously: “lapability”? What does that mean, exactly? If it means the ability to work with the Surface in a lap — maaaayybee. Neither the Touch nor Type Cover nor the dual kickstand gives me the feeling of working with a notebook in my lap. I’m hoping a more rigid Battery Cover changes that impression.
Surface Remix
Honestly, I didn’t really play with the ”Surface Remix” project that Microsoft had on hand, both because of a lack of time and without knowing if it would be a finished product. If you’re an audiophile or DJ, however, it’s worth checking out.
The bottom line: the additional performance and battery life are unquestionably significant strides forward for the Surface tablet. The new covers? Not so much. Microsoft’s message appears to be that the Surface is an engine of productivity; at this point, I’d go so far as to say that my fingers will want the old Type Covers back, backlit keyboard or no backlit keyboard.
Microsoft didn’t supply Surface tablets for review, so our analysis was based on limited time with demo units at the company’s launch event.
